iPad Pro + iOS 11: Can it replace your laptop?

People used to say that the iPad is just a giant iPhone without the phone, but not anymore! There are iPad exclusive features on iOS 11 that make iPad become more like a laptop rather than just a tablet that runs the same OS as the phone, features such as the new dock, the enhanced multi-tasking features like slide over along with split screen and picture-in-picture. Now you can even do drag and drop to and from different windows.

Drag and Drop on iPad Pro running iOS 11

maxresdefaultBefore iOS 11, the iPad Pro was already marketed to be a device that can replace your PC laptop. However there were a lot of things that the iPad Pro lacks when compared to a laptop due the limited capability of previous iOS versions.

When Apple first introduced the 12.9” iPad Pro and it ran iOS 9, like most people, my initial thoughts too were, why wouldn’t Apple put macOS on the iPad Pro which could make it a much more capable device, but now with iOS 11, I think people will begin to understand that better.

While their goal is to make iPad Pro a PC laptop replacement, rather than cramping a full desktop class OS that has been developed for decades in to an iPad and still expect it to work like a tablet, they continued to stick with iOS but added the capabilities of macOS to it. So iPad still works as what it is, a tablet! At the same time, it can also be your laptop. It’s essentially a hybrid with the best of both worlds.

I have been testing out iOS 11 on my 12.9 inch iPad Pro for the past weeks since it was announced on WWDC17, some of the features i like are, now you can scan documents directly from Notes, then you can sign on the document, easily do markups on screenshots and PDF, all that just right at your fingertips (or Apple Pencil Tip ^_^), and you can easily find your documents through the new Files app.

After experiencing iOS 11 on my iPad Pro with its Smart Keyboard and Apple Pencil, here’s my verdict on that question, Can iPad Pro replace your laptop?

Yes it can!

Based on some of the great new features i have listed, iPad Pro can be a replacement for your laptop if you are someone who handles lots of documents (PDF, Word etc.) or emails. Or if you are someone who does a lot of typing, you can use Word or Pages on the iPad on the go with a Smart Keyboard. iPad is also great for fine photo editing or sketching with the precision of the Apple Pencil.

However, that doesn’t mean that you can throw your laptop off the window now, there are still lots of room for improvements, a lot of features that iPad can still develop and its still not for everyone. For example, while everyone can do video editing on the iPad with apps like iMovie, that’s not something professional video or movie makers would consider using, professional video editing tools like Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro will still require a high performance laptop such as the MacBook Pro to handle the workload.

Otherwise, the iPad Pro can be your laptop replacement.

The 10.5 inch iPad Pro that replaces the 9.7 inch iPad Pro is still a great choice for portability and without compromises, it has a full-sized on-screen keyboard and matching Smart Keyboard.

My very own 12.9 inch iPad Pro

The 12.9 inch iPad Pro is similarly sized to a laptop and yet still more portable, more room for multitasking and great comfort for typing on its Smart Keyboard.

IMG_5221.jpgThe Apple Pencil may not be necessary for average users, but if you are willing to top up S$148 for it, it can come in handy if you have to sign a document or do some markups and send it off through email without the hassle of having to print a hard copy of it.

More about the Apple Pencil, I headed down to Apple Orchard Road to try out the new iPad Pro devices. I was amazed at how smooth and fast sketching on the new iPad Pro devices were. According to Apple, this is because the new iPad Pro displays have ProMotion technology which supports a 120 hertz refresh rate. With that, it also decreases the latency when using Apple Pencil to just 20 milliseconds making writing or sketching with Apple Pencil feel much more natural.

In a nutshell, iPad Pro is a very powerful tablet, give it a go, it may end up becoming your new ultraportable laptop!
